Aptos Labs has introduced a passwordless passkey authentication method for signing transactions on its Layer 1 blockchain network.

Passkeys are more user-friendly and mirror the ease of use found in services like Apple Pay or Google Pay, said Aptos CTO Avery Ching.

# AIP-66 - Passkey Accounts

## Summary

This AIP proposes the first [WebAuthn](https://www.w3.org/TR/webauthn-3/) Authenticator for Aptos, enabling users to utilize passkeys and other WebAuthn credentials for transaction authentication.

[Passkeys](https://fidoalliance.org/passkeys/) are designed to replace passwords as a phishing resistant, faster, and more secure form of user authentication. When a user registers a passkey, a new website-specific [public key credential](https://www.w3.org/TR/webauthn-3/#public-key-credential) is created on their device's [authenticator](https://www.w3.org/TR/webauthn-3/#authenticator). WebAuthn Authenticators securely store passkeys and enable users to access them via [authorization gestures](https://www.w3.org/TR/webauthn-3/#authorization-gesture) like Face ID or Touch ID. In future sessions with that website, the passkey can be used instead of a password to produce a digital signature that validates the identity of the user.
